Software is the computer programs and is divided into:

- Application software that solves problems for the computer user and improves his/her productivity such as banking programs, airline-reservation programs, educational programs, computer-aided design (CAD) programs as AutoCAD, computer games, word processors as Microsoft Word, and spreadsheets as Microsoft Excel.

- System software that provides an environment suitable for developing and executing application software such as operating systems as Windows and Unix, language translators (compilers and interpreters), and database management systems (DBMs) as Microsoft Access.
