Devices needed for network operation. Types are:
- Network Interface Card: An expansion card through which a computer is connected to a local area network. It is inserted into a motherboard slot. Examples are Ethernet and Token Ring cards.
- Repeater: A device that extends the area covered by a LAN by dividing the LAN into segments and connecting these segments together. It removes the noise imposed upon the data while the data are being transmitted through it from one network segment to another.
- Hub: A device through which computers are interconnected in a star LAN. An active hub is a multi-port repeater (connecting more than two LAN segments).
- Bridge: A smart repeater in the sense that it keeps the traffic for each LAN segment separate unless needed otherwise. This improves network performance by eliminating unnecessary traffic.
- Switch: Multi-port bridge (connecting more than two LAN segments). |
