Floppy-diskette drive (FDD) and floppy diskette (FD).
De-assembling a floppy diskette.
A floppy-diskette drive is a magnetic storage device. The storage medium is a floppy diskette (flexible disc) made of plastic covered with a magnetizable layer. Bits are stored (written) by magnetizing that layer’s particles. The direction of a particle’s magnetic field determines whether it represents a 0 or a 1. Bits are read by sensing the particles’ magnetic fields. The floppy diskette is enclosed in a hard plastic case for protection. The diskette is portable and inexpensive. Typically, it has a 3.5-inch diameter and its drive is referred to as a 3.5-inch drive. The diskette can be single or double- sided where a double-sided diskette stores data and programs on each of its two sides.
