Memory is volatile meaning that its contents are lost when the computer is shut down or when power goes off. It is referred to as the computer’s primary storage device, since secondary storage devices are hence needed to store data and programs for future use. Secondary storage devices are classified as:
- Magnetic: Operation of these devices involves the use of magnetic fields. Examples of magnetic devices are floppy-diskette drives (FDDs) and hard-disk drives (HDDs).
- Optical: Operation of these devices involves the use of laser light. Laser light differs from normal light in many aspects. Main ones are being very strong, very tight, and very concentrated. Examples of optical devices are compact disk (CD) drives and digital versatile disk (DVD) drives.
